Job Vacancy: Investment Analyst (Hybrid)

Position Summary

We are seeking a highly analytical and motivated Investment Analyst to join our team in Blantyre. This is a hybrid role combining onsite and remote work, but the candidate must be based in Blantyre or willing to relocate for regular in-person engagements.

The Investment Analyst will play a critical role in our investment process – from evaluating potential SME deals to monitoring our existing portfolio – and will report directly to the CEO. You will collaborate with team members both in Malawi and internationally, contributing to Luta's mission of scaling SMEs through innovative financing solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Deal Evaluation & Due Diligence: Identify and evaluate potential investment opportunities in SMEs. Conduct comprehensive due diligence, including financial analysis, risk assessment, and market research, to assess viability and alignment with Luta’s investment criteria. Prepare investment memos and recommendations for the CEO and investment committee (IC).
• Portfolio Monitoring & Reporting: Monitor the performance of Luta’s existing investment portfolio (SME loans and equity investments). Track key metrics and ensure timely repayments, identifying early warning signs of risk or underperformance. Prepare regular portfolio reports and updates for management and stakeholders, highlighting portfolio health and any needed follow-up actions.
• Market Research & Business Development Support: Stay informed on market trends, industry developments, and the SME landscape in Malawi and the region. Provide insights to inform our investment strategy and product offerings. Support business development initiatives by sourcing new deal leads, building relationships with entrepreneurs, and assisting portfolio companies with advisory support (e.g., refining business plans or connecting them to resources).
• Financial Modeling & Valuation: Build and maintain financial models to project company performance and analyze investment returns. Perform business valuations and scenario analysis for potential deals. (Strong financial modeling capability is essential, as it provides a structured way to analyze a company's current and future financial performance.)
• Collaboration & Communication: Work closely with the CEO and other team members (locally and abroad) throughout the investment process. Coordinate with external partners (e.g. co-investors, advisors) as needed. Clearly communicate analysis and recommendations through written reports and oral presentations, supporting decision-making at the highest level.
• Process Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of Luta’s investment processes. Help refine our evaluation frameworks, reporting tools, and risk management practices to enhance efficiency and effectiveness over time. Ensure all activities comply with company policies and relevant regulatory requirements.

Qualifications and Skills

• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Accounting or a related field. A Master’s degree or professional certification (e.g. CFA, ACCA) is an advantage, but not required.
• Experience: Prior experience in SME lending or lending in general is required. We prefer candidates with a track record (e.g. 2+ years) in credit analysis, investment analysis, or banking roles focused on small or medium-sized enterprises. Familiarity with the unique challenges and opportunities of financing SMEs (especially in emerging markets) will be a strong plus.
• Analytical Skills: Strong financial analysis and financial modeling skills are essential. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and/or Google Sheets for complex data analysis and modeling is required. Experience with company valuation methods and interpreting financial statements is expected.
• Knowledge: Good understanding of credit risk assessment and lending processes. Knowledge of portfolio monitoring techniques and risk mitigation strategies is desirable. Proficiency in Excel and financial analysis tools is required, and familiarity with credit scoring systems or investment management frameworks is a bonus.

• Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving and critical thinking abilities. Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy in work. Strong written and verbal communication skills – ability to present findings and recommendations clearly and persuasively.
• Team & Work Ethic: Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team. Self-motivated with strong organizational skills to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines. Comfortable working in a hybrid environment and coordinating with team members and partners across different locations and cultures. High professional integrity and ability to handle confidential information with discretion.
